Monterey, Massachusetts, 1998, marked the beginning of my photographic journey. There, I played with f-stops, shutter speeds and Polaroid transfers. This was my first formal endeavor to see the environment through the lens of a camera. I recall taking pictures of hay bales, pumpkins and trees, lots of trees.
Around that time, and to foster my growth, I was advised to choose subject matter that I knew best; subjects that were most accessible. As an introvert, places and things such as flowers, plants, sidewalks, and streets were top candidates. On any given day, in an effort to better understand myself and improve my skills, I preferred to photograph my immediate environment.
Three years later I was living in downtown Boston. I continued my formal photographic education inside the nearby darkrooms at the New England School of Photography and the Museum School. At the Cambridge Center for Adult Education I examined such questions as "What is beauty?" and "How does one turn the ordinary into the extraordinary?" Within this urban environment, I also grappled with questions about human nature and sustaining connection. I strived to enthusiastically and creatively work with other people in my Somerville studio.
After completing a two-year certificate of study in digital photography at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007, I held two solo exhibits in and around Boston. These early photographs of nature were still overwhelmingly abstract and yet offered viewers an opportunity for multiple, deeper, interpretations.
Since transitioning from teaching public school in Boston, traveling abroad, and relocating to teach high school in Maine, in 2017, my photographic preferences have shifted towards portraiture. I find that taking photographs of clients in the studio is an enjoyable, engaging, and creative experience for all. I currently offer studio headshots and fine art portraits in my convenient home studio on Cliff Street in Portland. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my interest and enthusiasm with new people from Maine and beyond as I pursue a relatively new and exciting personal direction in my photographic journey. Artists, musicians, business people, couples, singles and families are currently all of immense interest to me and are all welcome to inquire for a portrait or headshot using my contact page.
